Whether or not you need a work permit in Cyprus depends largely on your citizenship. Cyprus is part of the EU, and rules differ for EU/EEA citizens versus non-EU citizens.

1. EU/EEA Citizens

  • No work permit is required.

  • You have the right to live and work freely in Cyprus.

  • If you plan to stay longer than 3 months, you must register your residence at the Civil Registry and Migration Department.

  • You may need to obtain a Registration Certificate (MEU1) as proof of your right to reside and work.

2. Non-EU/EEA Citizens

If you are not from the EU/EEA, you must obtain a work permit before starting employment in Cyprus.

Requirements:

  • A job offer from a Cyprus employer.

  • Proof that the employer could not find a suitable EU/EEA candidate for the position.

  • Documents required for the work permit application:

    • Valid passport

    • Employment contract

    • Educational or professional qualifications

    • Health insurance

    • Completed application forms

Validity and Renewal:

  • Work permits are usually issued for 1 year and can be renewed.

  • Some permits may allow family members to join.

  • Seasonal or short-term work permits are available for temporary employment.

3. Special Cases

  • Highly Skilled Workers: Professionals in IT, engineering, or healthcare may have a faster permit process.

  • Seasonal Workers: Seasonal work (tourism, agriculture) has a simplified permit application.

  • Self-Employed: Non-EU citizens who start a business must apply for a self-employment permit.

4. Where to Apply

  • Civil Registry and Migration Department (Υπηρεσία Αρχείων Πληθυσμού και Μετανάστευσης)

  • Employer Initiated Process: Usually, your employer submits most documents on your behalf.

5. Summary Table

Citizenship Work Permit Needed? Notes
EU/EEA No Registration required if staying >3 months
Non-EU/EEA Yes Job offer required; employer must apply
Seasonal / Short-term Yes (simplified) Often easier to obtain for tourism/agriculture
Self-Employed Yes Apply for self-employment permit
  • EU/EEA citizens: No work permit required; registration is needed for stays longer than 3 months.

  • Non-EU/EEA citizens: Work permit is mandatory before starting work. Seasonal and highly skilled jobs may have simplified procedures.

Understanding this distinction is crucial before applying for jobs in Cyprus to ensure your employment is legal and compliant.
