A biometric residence card is an official identity document issued to non-EU nationals who are legally allowed to live in the Netherlands.

It proves who you are and what your legal residence status is. The card contains your biometric data, which helps authorities verify your identity securely.

What Does “Biometric” Mean?

“Biometric” means the card includes unique physical data that belongs only to you, such as:

  • A digital photograph

  • Fingerprints

These details are stored securely on a chip inside the card and help prevent identity fraud.

Who Gets a Biometric Residence Card?

You receive a biometric residence card if you are a non-EU / non-EEA national who has been granted permission to stay in the Netherlands, including:

  • Work permit holders

  • EU Blue Card holders

  • International students

  • Family members of residents

  • Researchers and trainees

  • Long-term or permanent residents

EU citizens do not receive this card.

What Information Is on the Biometric Residence Card?

The card usually shows:

  • Full name

  • Date and place of birth

  • Nationality

  • Residence permit type

  • Validity start and end dates

  • Remarks (such as “work permitted” or restrictions)

  • Photograph and fingerprints (stored digitally)

It works as both a residence proof and an identity document inside the Netherlands.

Why Is a Biometric Residence Card Important?

The biometric residence card is required for many daily and legal activities, including:

  • Proving your legal right to stay

  • Starting a job

  • Registering for a BSN

  • Opening a bank account

  • Accessing healthcare

  • Traveling in and out of the Netherlands

  • Dealing with government authorities

Without this card, you may face delays or legal issues, even if your residence permit is approved.

Is a Biometric Residence Card the Same as a Visa?

No. They are different documents.

  • A visa (MVV or short-stay visa) allows you to enter the Netherlands

  • A biometric residence card proves your right to stay after entry

Most long-term residents enter with a visa and then collect their biometric residence card after arrival.

How Do You Get a Biometric Residence Card?

The process usually includes:

  1. Residence permit approval

  2. Providing biometrics (photo and fingerprints)

  3. Card production by immigration authorities

  4. Collection from a designated office or municipality

Biometrics are usually collected once, but may be required again for renewals.

How Long Is the Card Valid?

Validity depends on your residence permit type:

  • Temporary permits: usually 1–5 years

  • Permanent residence: longer validity, but the card must still be renewed

Always check the expiry date printed on the card.

Can You Travel with a Biometric Residence Card?

Yes.

Together with a valid passport, the biometric residence card allows you to:

  • Re-enter the Netherlands after travel

  • Travel within the Schengen Area (short stays)

It is a mandatory document for re-entry.

What If You Lose Your Biometric Residence Card?

If the card is lost, stolen, or damaged:

  • Report it immediately

  • Apply for a replacement

  • You may need a temporary travel document if abroad

Do not travel without resolving the issue.

Key Points to Remember

  • Issued to non-EU residents in the Netherlands

  • Contains photo and fingerprints

  • Proves legal residence status

  • Required for work, travel, and services

  • Must be valid and carried when needed
