If you plan to work in Slovakia, you’ll need to obtain a work permit and temporary residence for employment purposes. Submitting the correct documents is a crucial part of your application. Missing or incorrect paperwork can delay or even reject your work visa process.

This guide from EUHelpers explains the required documents, application process, and key tips to help you prepare your Slovakia work permit file accurately and on time.

Types of Work Authorization in Slovakia

Before applying, it’s important to know that there are two main categories of work authorization in Slovakia:

  1. Single Permit (Unified Permit) – Combines both residence and work permission for non-EU citizens employed by a Slovak company.

  2. Work Permit Only – For specific cases like seasonal work, short-term projects, or when the applicant already holds a valid residence permit for another reason.

The list of documents depends on which category applies to your situation.

Documents Required for a Slovakia Work Permit

Below is the general list of documents required to apply for a Slovak work permit through the Foreign Police Department or your employer.

1. Valid Passport

A passport valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay is mandatory. Include all previous visas and stamps if available.

2. Employment Contract or Job Offer Letter

A signed employment contract or official job offer from a registered Slovak employer specifying your position, salary, and employment duration.

3. Proof of Education or Qualifications

Submit your diploma, trade certificate, or professional qualification translated into Slovak by a certified translator.

4. Proof of Accommodation in Slovakia

A rental agreement or employer-provided housing letter confirming your address in Slovakia is required for residence registration.

5. Criminal Record Certificate

A police clearance certificate from your home country (and any country you’ve lived in for more than 90 days in the past three years) must be legalized and translated into Slovak.

6. Medical Certificate

Issued by a licensed Slovak doctor, confirming that you do not suffer from any communicable diseases.

7. Proof of Financial Means

Evidence that you can support yourself, such as recent bank statements or income proof, meeting the minimum financial threshold set by Slovak authorities.

8. Two Passport-Size Photos

Recent color photos taken on a white background.

9. Application Form

Completed and signed application form for work and residence, available through the Slovak Ministry of Interior or your local Foreign Police Office.

10. Health Insurance Proof

Document showing that you have valid health insurance coverage valid in Slovakia.

Additional Documents (if applicable)

You may also be asked for:

  • Employer registration certificate from the Slovak Business Register.

  • Tax clearance or business license of your employer.

  • Previous residence permit copies (if you’ve lived in another EU country).

Always confirm with your local Slovak embassy or your employer for the most accurate document checklist.

Document Translation and Legalization

All foreign documents must be officially translated into Slovak and may require apostille or consular legalizationbefore submission. Using uncertified translations can result in rejection or delays.

Where to Submit Your Application

You can submit your Slovakia work permit application:

  • At the Slovak Embassy or Consulate in your home country, or

  • Directly at the Foreign Police Department in Slovakia (if you are already legally staying there).

Processing time usually takes 30 to 90 days, depending on the case and region.

Key Tips for a Successful Application

  • Double-check all document translations before submission.

  • Apply well before your intended start date (at least 90 days in advance).

  • Keep copies of every submitted document for your records.

  • Verify your employer’s legitimacy to avoid fraudulent offers.
