Can I change job roles after arriving in UK?

Yes, you can change job roles after arriving in the UK, but the rules depend on your visa type, your sponsor, and whether the new job is on the list of eligible occupations.
For most foreign workers, changing roles is possible, but you may need to update your visa, apply for a new Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS), or in some cases, apply for a new visa entirely.

Understanding these rules helps you avoid breaking immigration law and protects your right to stay and work in the UK legally.

Changing Job Roles on a Skilled Worker Visa

If you are in the UK on a Skilled Worker Visa, your permission to work is tied to:

  • Your employer (sponsor)

  • Your job role

  • Your occupation code (SOC code)

  • Your salary

Any major change to these can require a visa update.

When You Must Apply for a New Skilled Worker Visa

You must apply for a new visa if:

  • You change to a different occupation code (for example, moving from warehouse work to customer service)

  • You change your job to a lower skill or lower salary level that no longer meets Skilled Worker rules

  • You change employers (new sponsor must issue a new CoS)

  • Your role changes so much that duties no longer match your original occupation code

In these situations, your new employer must assign a new Certificate of Sponsorship, and you must apply for a new Skilled Worker Visa.

When You Do Not Need a New Visa

You usually do not need a new visa if:

  • You stay with the same employer, and

  • Your job moves within the same occupation code, and

  • Your salary still meets Skilled Worker requirements

Example:
If you work as a warehouse supervisor and become a warehouse team leader (same SOC code), you may only need your employer to update your records.

However, the employer still has a duty to report the job change to the Home Office.

Changing Employers in the UK

If you want to switch employers:

  • Your new employer must be a licensed sponsor

  • They must assign you a new CoS

  • You must submit a new Skilled Worker Visa application

You can start working for your new employer only after receiving your new visa approval.

Can Seasonal Workers Change Roles?

Seasonal Worker Visa holders cannot change job roles freely. The visa:

  • Is tied to the sponsoring employer

  • Only permits seasonal work in agriculture

  • Does not allow switching to other sectors like construction, hospitality, or warehouse jobs

To change sectors, you must leave the UK and apply for a different visa route.

Healthcare Visa and SOC Code Changes

Healthcare workers also need to follow SOC code rules. If your new role has a different occupation code (e.g., switching from nursing assistant to admin role), you will likely need a new visa.

What If You Change Roles Without Updating Your Visa?

Working in a job not covered by your visa is a violation of immigration rules. Consequences may include:

  • Visa cancellation

  • Loss of sponsor licence for the employer

  • Refusal of future visa applications

  • Requirement to leave the UK

Always ensure your new role is legally approved before starting it.

Can You Upgrade to a Better Job?

Yes. Many workers use the Skilled Worker Visa route to:

  • Move to higher-paying roles

  • Change departments

  • Change companies

  • Progress into management roles

Just make sure the new job meets the Skilled Worker criteria and is properly sponsored.

Final Thoughts

You can change job roles after arriving in the UK, but you must follow the Home Office rules.
If the new role stays within the same occupation code and you work for the same employer, you usually do not need a new visa.
If the job is in a different occupation code, or you switch employers, a new visa application is required.

Always confirm with your employer and check the job’s eligibility before making any move.
