The Working Holiday Visa (Type D) is a special long-term visa that allows young citizens from select countries to live, work, and travel in Austria for up to one year. Designed as a cultural exchange program, it offers participants the chance to gain international experience through short-term or seasonal employment while also enjoying life in one of Europe’s most scenic and culturally rich countries.

What Does the Working Holiday Visa Allow?

Holders of the Working Holiday Visa can:

  • Legally work in short-term or seasonal jobs.

  • Enroll in language or other short-term educational courses.

  • Travel freely within the Schengen Area for up to 90 days during the visa’s validity.

This visa offers a unique blend of work, education, and travel, making it ideal for young adults looking to expand their horizons and immerse themselves in Austrian and European culture.

Important: The visa is non-renewable and can be issued only once in a lifetime.

Who Can Apply?

Only citizens of countries that have bilateral agreements with Austria are eligible. As of 2025, the following nationalities can apply:

  • Australia – stay permitted for up to 12 months

  • Canada – up to 12 months, applicants must be 35 years or younger

  • New Zealand – stay of up to 6 months

  • USA, Japan, Argentina, Chile, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong – up to 12 months

Age and Background Requirements

  • Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old (with Canada allowing up to age 35).

  • The visa is aimed at students, recent graduates, young professionals, or those taking a career break.

The Working Holiday Visa is an excellent opportunity to gain work experience abroad, improve language skills, and explore Europe—all while living in Austria for an extended period.
