The UK Youth Mobility Scheme visa offers young adults the opportunity to live, work, and experience life in the United Kingdom for up to two years. This scheme is designed for individuals aged between 18 and 30 (or up to 35 depending on nationality) from specific countries and territories, or those with certain types of British nationality.

Who Can Apply?

To be eligible for the Youth Mobility Scheme visa, applicants must:

  • Be aged between 18 and 30, or up to 35 for some nationalities

  • Hold a passport from a country or territory listed in the UK’s eligibility requirements, or possess certain types of British nationality

  • Have at least £2,530 in personal savings

  • Apply no earlier than six months before their intended travel date

Example: If you plan to enter the UK on 15 July, the earliest you can submit your application is 16 January.

Application Timeline

After submitting your application, proving your identity, and supplying the necessary documents, most applicants receive a visa decision within three weeks.

Keep in mind that additional time may be needed if you are required to attend a biometrics appointment. This will be indicated during the application process.

Costs Involved

Applicants will need to pay:

  • Application fee: £319

  • Healthcare surcharge: £776 per year (totaling £1,552 for two years)

  • Proof of personal savings: At least £2,530, which must be held for a minimum period as specified in the eligibility guidelines

Visa Duration and Extensions

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa is valid for 24 months. During this time, you may enter and leave the UK freely.

If you turn 31 while on this visa, you can remain in the UK until your visa expires.

Extension Option: Applicants from Australia, Canada, or New Zealand can apply to extend their stay by an additional year after the initial two years.

What You Can Do on This Visa

Holders of the Youth Mobility Scheme visa can:

  • Work in most types of jobs

  • Study (an ATAS certificate may be required for certain courses)

  • Be self-employed or set up a business, provided:

    • The business premises are rented

    • Equipment value does not exceed £5,000

    • No employees are hired

Restrictions

The visa does not permit the following:

  • Working as a professional sportsperson or coach

  • Accessing public funds or benefits

  • Extending your stay (unless from Australia, Canada, or New Zealand)

  • Including family members on your application (they must apply independently)

The Youth Mobility Scheme visa offers a unique chance for young adults to explore life in the UK while gaining international work and life experience. With clear guidelines and a relatively quick application process, this visa is a popular choice for eligible candidates looking for short-term residency in the United Kingdom.
