The Austrian Working Holiday Visa (Type D) allows young citizens from select countries to live, work, and travel in Austria for up to one year. To take advantage of this unique opportunity, applicants must carefully prepare the required documents and submit their application through the appropriate diplomatic mission.

Required Documents for the Working Holiday Visa

To apply for the visa, you’ll need to gather the following:

  • Valid Passport

    • Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Austria, plus at least three additional months beyond your departure date.

  • Proof of Financial Means

    • This may include recent bank statements or a letter of financial support from a sponsor, demonstrating your ability to support yourself during your stay.

  • Health and Travel Insurance

    • A valid policy with minimum coverage of €30,000, covering medical expenses and repatriation for the entire duration of your stay.

  • Completed Visa D Application Form

    • Accurately filled out and signed.

  • Biometric Passport Photo

    • One recent passport-sized photo (taken within the last 6 months) that meets biometric standards.

  • Educational Documents

    • Depending on your country of origin, you may be required to submit a university diploma, transcript, or proof of enrollment.

  • Criminal Record Certificate

    • Required for applicants from some countries, as specified by the Austrian authorities.

Where and How to Apply

Applications must be submitted in person through the Austrian embassy or consulate in your country of citizenship. In some countries, such as Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, VFS Global may handle visa submissions on Austria’s behalf.

If you are already in Europe (e.g., the UK), and hold citizenship from Australia, Canada, or New Zealand, you may apply through the Austrian Embassy in London.

When to Apply

It is strongly advised to apply 2–3 months before your intended departure date to allow sufficient processing time. Applications submitted less than three weeks before travel may not be processed in time.

Proper planning and timely submission are essential to securing your visa and enjoying a smooth start to your Austrian working holiday adventure.
