Portugal is one of the most accessible countries in the European Union for EU nationals, offering simple procedures for both entry and legal stay.

Entry Requirements

As a citizen of an EU member state, you can enter Portugal using any of the following valid travel documents:

  • National ID card

  • Passport

  • Temporary passport

There is no need to apply for a visa, and there are no strict requirements regarding the validity period of these documents as long as they are not expired. Thanks to the principle of free movement within the EU, no additional formalities are required at the border for EU citizens.

This visa-free stay allows EU nationals to remain in Portugal for up to 90 days without needing any further documentation.

Staying Beyond 90 Days

If you plan to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days, you must take steps to legalize your stay. There are two main options:

  1. Register at the Local City Office (Câmara Municipal)
Apply for a Certificate of Registration for EU Citizens (Certificado de Registo de Cidadão da União Europeia). This is a straightforward process that confirms your right to live in Portugal.

  2. Apply at the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF)
Visit your local Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) office to request a residence card, which is valid for 5 years.

Required Documents

Before attending your appointment at either office, ensure you have all necessary documentation, which may include:

  • Proof of health insurance

  • Evidence of sufficient financial resources to support yourself

  • Confirmation of enrollment in education (e.g., Erasmus program)

  • Proof of employment or self-employment

These documents demonstrate your purpose of stay and confirm that you meet the conditions for lawful residence in Portugal.

By following these steps, EU citizens can enjoy a smooth and legal stay in Portugal, whether for work, study, or personal reasons. Be sure to plan ahead and have your paperwork in order to avoid any complications.
