Easter stands as one of the most cherished and meaningful holidays in Europe, symbolizing the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the arrival of spring. Across the continent, this religious celebration is marked with deeply rooted customs, vibrant decorations, and festive gatherings. From joyful egg hunts to traditional feasts, Easter traditions vary significantly from country to country, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of each region.

Let’s explore how Easter is celebrated in 2025 across Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Ukraine, Romania, and Denmark.

Germany: Easter Fairs and Chocolate Bunnies
In Germany, Easter festivities stretch from Maundy Thursday through Easter Monday. Families gather for traditional meals, and cities host delightful Easter fairs, offering handcrafted decorations, sweets, and springtime treats. Children eagerly await the Easter bunny, a beloved figure said to bring colorful eggs and gifts. Popular holiday dishes include Easter bread, chocolate bunnies, pastries shaped like hares and eggs, and lamb-based meals.

Poland: Sacred Traditions and Śmigus-Dyngus Fun
Easter in Poland blends solemn religious rituals with joyful customs. On Holy Saturday, families bring decorated food baskets to church for blessing. These baskets typically include symbolic items like eggs (representing life), bread (Jesus), salt (purity), sausage, and cake. The highlight for many, especially children and youth, comes on Easter Monday with Śmigus-Dyngus—a playful tradition where people splash water on each other to welcome spring and chase away bad spirits. Easter meals often feature żurek (sour rye soup with sausage), babka (yeast cake), and mazurek (a shortcrust pastry topped with nuts and icing).

The Netherlands: Easter Bonfires and Open-Air Feasting
In the Netherlands, Easter is often celebrated outdoors thanks to the mild spring weather. Families enjoy festive brunches, typically featuring eggs, bread, and an Easter omelet. A standout Dutch tradition is the lighting of Easter bonfires (Paasvuren)—a symbolic act meant to foster unity and chase away winter. Local communities gather to share warmth, food, and laughter around these massive flames.

Romania: Midnight Mass and Cozonac Delights
Romania’s Easter celebration is filled with vibrant traditions and deep spiritual meaning. One of the most iconic customs is the painting of eggs in vivid colors using wax and intricate patterns. The midnight Easter service is the spiritual high point, followed by a feast at home with family. Traditional Easter dishes include lamb, dyed eggs, sausages, and cozonac—a sweet, nut-filled bread enjoyed across the country.

Denmark: Gækkebreve and Festive Meals
In Denmark, Easter brings families and friends together for cozy meals, featuring seafood, eggs, and the seasonal favorite—Easter beer. One of Denmark’s unique traditions is the exchange of gækkebreve, anonymous letters containing rhyming verses and spring wishes. If the recipient guesses the sender, they receive an Easter egg as a reward! The holiday menu often includes herring, salmon, deviled eggs, and special pastries.

Ukraine: Pysanky and Sacred Easter Baskets
Easter in Ukraine is deeply spiritual, with ancient customs that have been passed down for generations. The most famous tradition is pysanky—the art of decorating eggs with wax-resist dyeing techniques. On Holy Saturday, families bring baskets filled with symbolic foods such as paska (Easter bread), eggs, sausage, cheese, butter, and horseradish to be blessed at church. The Easter table is a beautiful display of these blessed items, celebrating renewal and abundance.

A Celebration of Diversity and Unity
Easter across Europe is a tapestry of unique customs, flavors, and spiritual practices. From the bonfires in the Netherlands to water fights in Poland and sacred midnight masses in Romania, each tradition tells a story of faith, renewal, and the power of community. As 2025 brings another season of spring, these celebrations continue to unite generations, reminding us of our shared values and cultural richness.
