Bulgaria is preparing for a historic economic milestone — the adoption of the euro (EUR) as its official currency. The changeover will take place gradually from August 8, 2025, to December 31, 2026, with prices displayed in both Bulgarian lev (BGN) and euro to ensure transparency for consumers, businesses, and travelers.

Timeline of the Euro Transition in Bulgaria

August 8 – December 31, 2025

  • All prices must be shown in BGN and EUR.

  • Payments are still accepted only in lev.

  • Goal: Help consumers get familiar with euro prices.

January 1 – January 31, 2026

  • Both lev and euro will be accepted for payments.

  • Change must be given mainly in euro (lev only if no euro available).

  • Important: Giving change in both currencies at the same time is prohibited.

From February 1, 2026

  • The euro becomes the sole legal tender in Bulgaria.

  • Dual price display will continue until December 31, 2026.

Payment Rules During Transition

  • Until Dec 2025: Payments only in lev.

  • January 2026: Both currencies accepted, change mostly in euro.

  • After Feb 2026: Only euro accepted nationwide.

Dual Pricing Requirements

All goods and services must show prices in both BGN and EUR.
Exceptions (where dual pricing is technically difficult):

  • Books with pre-printed prices.

  • Tobacco products with excise stamps.

  • Motor fuel prices on outdoor displays.

  • Taxi meters.

  • Certain financial instruments.

Solution: Stickers, digital signage, or price lists on websites/apps.

Conversion & Rounding Rules

  • Fixed exchange rate: €1 = 1.95583 BGN.

  • Round to two decimal places:

    • 3rd digit 0–4 → round down.

    • 3rd digit 5–9 → round up.

Examples:

  • 5 BGN → €2.56 (from 2.556459).

  • 50 BGN → €25.56 (from 25.56459).

Transparency Standards

  • Prices in both currencies must be equally visible (same font size, clear symbols).

  • Advertising rules:

    • Before euro adoption → prices in lev only.

    • After adoption → prices in euro only.

  • Discounts & promotions: Show final price in both currencies.

Example:
Old price: 839.99 BGN → New price: 713.99 BGN / €365.06.

Tools for Consumers

The government provides an official euro conversion calculator at:

  • euro.bg

  • evroto.bg

This ensures accurate conversions and helps tourists and residents during the transition.

Impact on Tourists & Expats

  • August 2025 – Dec 2025: Prices shown in both currencies, but pay in lev.

  • January 2026: Carry both lev and euro for convenience.

  • From Feb 2026: Euro only accepted.

  • Dual pricing until end of 2026 ensures clarity and transparency.

Why This Matters

Bulgaria’s euro adoption marks deeper EU integration and promises:

  • Transparent pricing for consumers.

  • Simplified transactions for tourists and expats.

  • Stronger economic stability within the Eurozone.
